Your Investment: Improved

August 28, 2020

When you make an investment, you want to know how it works. All of the bells and whistles, the clever shortcuts, and the changes that make it different from the last instrument you used are important to know for the most efficient and effective use of your new gas chromatography mass spectrometer. LECO has always offered in-person training classes and on-site lab visits, but in today's changing world with travel restrictions and social distancing, how can you learn about your Pegasus® BT while staying safe?

Our Lab at Your Front Door

February 26, 2020

LECO understands that taking time away from your lab to visit our headquarters in Saint Joseph, Michigan, is not always a possibility. Travel alone is a hassle, much less the downtime of being away from your lab and the expense of all of the arrangements. Unfortunately, even our bench-top Pegasus® GC-TOFMS is a bit too large to slip into a carry-on for an in-person experience. Webinars and virtual demonstrations have come a long way in bringing new technology closer for your inspection, but there's nothing like getting to kick the tires and have a hands-on experience to really know what you could be adding to your lab. What’s a busy lab manager to do?

GC-MS Water Analysis: Why is TOF Better than Quadrupole?

December 5, 2018

Did you see the recent Q&A on GC-MS Water Analysis on LCGC? David Benanou, of Veolia Research and Innovation, challenged a gas chromatography—time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC–MS-TOF) instrument (our Pegasus BT) to its limit of quantification by injecting very dilute solutions of compounds beyond their odor threshold concentration.

With the Pegasus BT, a quantitation limit of 2 pg per liter was required to obtain the full mass spectrum, whereas a GC–MS quadrupole instrument required 100 pg per liter to obtain the same result. LCGC recently sat down with David, an expert of analytical chemistry, to further discuss the advantages of TOF analysis.

How GC-MS Can Solve the Puzzle of Metabolomics

November 14, 2018

Metabolomics presents challenges for both the analytical methods used and the data reduction required to interpret the results. No single analytical technique can be used for complete characterization of the metabolome, and no metabolome has ever been completely characterized. This is where GC-MS comes in...

How does beer age? Watch our on-demand webinar, which investigated the shelf-life stability of IPAs!

October 18, 2018

IPAs are one of the most popular beers in the United States, but what is an IPA exactly? IPA stands for India Pale Ale, and what makes it unique is the abundance of hops, which tend to be a bit bitter to the taste. Despite an IPA's unique flavor, they continue to gain popularity each year with sales increasing by $176 million in 2017 alone, according to The Beer Connoisseur. Clearly, love for the bold beer is strong, yet say you buy a six-pack and save it for a special occasion—how long will your beer last before it goes bad?

What's in my wine?

May 23, 2018

It’s National Wine Day! Who knew there even was such a thing? According to National Day Calendar, this unofficial holiday is an excuse to get together with friends and family while reminiscing over a glass of wine. Perhaps you are like me—I tend to pick a bottle and pour myself a glass without putting much thought into how it was made and why it tastes the way it does.

Tasting "Weird and Wild" Jelly Bean Flavors Using GC-TOFMS

April 12, 2018

Do you have leftover jelly beans from the Easter Bunny’s visit on Sunday? Jelly beans are one of those unique candies that can be somewhat addicting and also a game of surprise as to what flavor you may get. Is the pink color bubblegum or strawberry flavored? Is the green sour apple or grass? Jelly bean flavors have gotten more and more unique over the years, and sometimes tasting them can be quite the gamble. Because of this, and in conjunction with Bring Your Child to Work Day (a national event in the United States), our application chemists decided a fun experiment would be to “taste” these jelly bean flavors using GC-TOFMS.
